Exit the turtle
The
Turtle (Addison Mitchell McConnell III) announced he's
leaving his position as Senate Minority Leader
after the election. A couple or three
decades late for most of us. If he once had some honorable motivation i hasn't been there for those decades. The obligatory
To serve Kentucky in the
Senate has been the honor of my life. To lead my Republican colleagues has been my highest privilege comment as usual contains a kernel or two of truth.
As for service, like most politicians he served himself and that's about it. Now if we're talking about some altruistic sort of service...
He did serve his masters, the Republican political establishment and his Chinese benefactors. More on that it a bit. If he believes he somehow the Republic
benefitted from his tenure he has a strange definition of that word. I'm willing to believe that he believes the nation is better off with tools like himself
managing its decline, but it isn't. It's to, or perilously near the point where fixing it will be a very ugly process, akin to some of the
nastier revolutions and
civil wars.
Yet people like him seem either incapable of believing it can happen or all too capable of believing that their clumsy manipulations can prevent it.
Perhaps having never been anything but a political animal he does believe it, but his pursuit of it has been (largely through his control of party funds) destroying those who
attempt reform and promoting those of his ilk.
As Ecclesiastes tells us, 'To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under Heaven.'
To serve Kentucky in the Senate has been the honor of my life. To lead my Republican colleagues has been my highest privilege.
But one of life's most underappreciated talents is to know when it's time to move on to life's next chapter.
So, I stand before you today, Mr. President and my colleagues, to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.
I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, however. I will complete the job my colleagues have given me until we select a new leader in November and they take the helm next January.
I will finish the job the people of Kentucky hired me to do as well, albeit from a different seat in the chamber. I am looking forward to that.
He doesn't even attempt a Biblical quote, just mentions it in passing. Yeah Mitch, the season for you to go has been here for a long time. And what 'next
chapter' it that? At his age and condition he could be at room temperature before Joetato.
Story is, a possible Republican president next year and the incoming
Republicans he doesn't control would boot him anyway. The fact is he's been compromised from his earliest days by his putting his career ahead of everything, and now
by failing mental capacity.
His one service to the Republic was in judicial appointments. He did about as well as could be expected in getting decent ones on the Supreme Court, that fact that
one or went limp once they were on the bench is not something that could have been foreseen, people being what they are.
Keeping Garland off the court was enough to
forgive him quite a lot but it's hard to say if it outweighs the rest. Why did he do that? Maybe because China doesn't care that much who's on the Supreme
Court. It doesn't have the opportunity or ability that often to do things that would make their objectives harder to achieve, so they let him make the gesture.
